One of the significant challenges with EMC testing is the 'mystery' that often surrounds it. This mystery includes several aspects: the number of tests a product needs to undergo, the reasons for conducting these tests, how to set up the tests correctly, and the interpretation of the results. When design engineers send a unit to an EMC test facility, even if they are present during the EMC testing stage (which can last for days to weeks), they may have limited understanding of why specific tests are necessary or how various factors, such as cable layout and unit bonding, can impact the test outcomes.

EMC testing primarily involves high-frequency signal measurements, and subtle details in the set-up can significantly influence the results. This complexity can make it challenging for engineers to perform meaningful pre-compliance EMC checks in their own labs or accurately predict the outcomes of full-scale tests. However, conducting effective pre-compliance EMC checks is essential, as it can substantially increase the likelihood of passing EMC tests in an accredited EMC chamber on the first attempt. This not only saves time but also reduces costs associated with EMC testing, including fees paid to EMC test labs, preparation and communication time, allocation of engineering resources, and lead times, which can be lengthy (typically at least four weeks). All of these factors contribute to the overall cost of bringing a product to market.

Therefore, this section aims to introduce quick and easy-to-implement EMC benchtop test set-ups, along with valuable tips for high-frequency signal measurement and troubleshooting skills. We hope that these insights will assist design engineers in reducing their time to market for products. This section includes the following parts:
